Dyslexia and Dyscalcula

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed. Dyslexia occurs across the range of intellectual abilities. It can impact greatly on your child's ability to engage in learning and have a profound effects on self confdence.

Dyscalculia is a condition that affects the ability to acquire arithmetical skills. Much like dyslexia disrupts areas of the brain related to reading, dyscalculia affects brain areas that handle math- and number-related skills and understanding. Dyscalculic learners may have difficulty understanding simple number concepts, lack an intuitive grasp of numbers and have problems learning number facts and procedures. It is estimated that between 3% and 6% of the population are affected.

 

Our specialist teachers, assessors and Psychologists can provide assessment, advice and support for young people with these difficulties through:

  • Specific, indepth literacy assessment to establish areas of strength and weakness

  • Identification of a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), such as dyslexia and dyscalculia

  • Individual support and teaching tailored to your child's needs

  • Advice to teachers and parents on how best to support the child, both in the classroom and in the home   setting 

  • Advice to teachers and parents on delivering a range of targetted phonic interventions, such as phonics, kinaesthetic and alternative approaches, and on developing Individual Education Plans
